Why do I enjoy live music? How can I amplify a heartbeat? What does dirt sound like? That’s a cools noise. How can this object be used again? These are some of the first questions and statements that start a long line of inquiry which lead to my material-based sound installations and sculptures. My work explores the sonic qualities of material, form, and interactive play. By dissecting individual components and materials of everyday objects, I can connect the seemingly ethereal Sound Object to the physical Material Object. I look to interpret the role of iconic forms, bound-up with functional and associative identity, and how it informs an audience’s interaction with the objects I create. To that end, I play in my studio, experimenting with the boundaries of raw materials and object components; while creating new connections between form, function, and context. Despite any conceptual intent, the goal is always to effectively share those playful discoveries that often inform the resulting installation or object. In its broadest sense, the driving force is to reconnect the eyes and ears of the audience with the physical and material nature of sound through everyday objects and materials.
